* have since
Example 1: Timothy graduated in 2008 and has since worked in his father's company.
Example 2: The director retired two years ago and has since disappeared from public attention.

2.Chat Room:

* uptown (Manhattan上城) 北區
* midtown (中城) 中區
* downtown (下城) 南區

* 注意:
一般只有downtown,市中心。
uptown當形容詞時,指高級的、昂貴的
Example: uptown girl 富家女


3.Language Tips:

* fashion statement 時尚宣言
Example: The girls made a fashion statement by coloring their hair blonde.

* drape 使布料或衣服形成皺折狀態
Example: Hank used a ladder to drape curtains over the windows.
(Hank把窗戶裝上窗簾。)

* drape 也指披掛上
Example: She draped a red scarf over her coat.
(她披了一條紅圍巾在大衣上。)

Example 1: The hurricane cause catastrophic damage in the coastal area.
Example 2: It took years for the country to recover from the catastrophic earthquake.

* staff 機構全體職員或工作人員
集合名詞,不可數,亦不可指個別人員

* a staff member
* staffer 可數,單一或個別職員或工作人員
Example: He is a White House staffer.
(他是白宮的職員。)

staff 當動詞時,指為某地配備人員
* fully staffed 人員名額已滿,沒有空缺

2.Language Tips:

* gambol 嘻鬧,跳躍

Example 1: The puppies are gamboling around their mother.
(小狗狗在媽媽身邊蹦蹦跳跳的。)

Example 2: Kids are gamboling around on the playground.
(小朋友再操場上四處蹦蹦跳跳。)

* clutch 緊握,抓緊

Example 1: The old lady clutched her handbag to her chest while walking to the bank.
(這位老太太走到銀行時將皮包緊緊抓在胸前。)

Example 2: Patricia clutched her husband's hand while she was in labor.

(他拿駕照作為身份。)

2.Language Tips:

* mishap 不幸的事故或災禍 (但通常不是非常嚴重)
Example: After several mishaps during the trip, we finally got home.
(旅途中經過幾次小事故後,我們終於回到家。)

* without mishap 平安無事
The document arrived without mishap.
(這份文件平安無事的到達。)

recourse 倚賴,依賴,求助 Uncountable nouns
求助的對象用介系詞 "to"
Example 1: The single mother takes care of her kids without recourse to any help.
(這位單親媽媽沒有倚靠任何人的幫助獨立照顧小孩。)

Example 2: The couple had recourse to counseling to save their marriage.
(這對夫妻求助婚姻輔導來保住婚姻。)

* pink slip 解雇通知單 (公司要你走路,意指你被開除、裁員、解雇)

* come in handy (use in informal way)
= be useful
= be convenient

(1) How something can be convenient or useful

Example: Since you might buy a lot of things, you should bring an extra bag with you; it might come in handy.

(2) Something is really useful at an unexpected time

Example: Patrick's old umbrella came in handy because he came to work unprepared for rain.

3.Language Tips:

Example: The electronic device repels insects with sound waves.
(這種電子裝置用聲波驅趕昆蟲。)

* fasten 繫牢,扣緊 (t不發音)
Example: He fasten the straps of his backpack.
(他把背包上的皮帶繫緊。)

* appeal 吸引
吸引某對象用介係詞 "to"

Example: The vibrant colors and relaxing atmosphere of the restaurant appeal to young customers.
